Spelman College, founded in 1881 and renowned as a pillar of empowerment for Black women, is taking a giant leap forward in promoting diversity in STEM. On July 13, 2025, the college announced a comprehensive initiative designed to increase the representation and success of Black women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The program offers expanded scholarships, targeted mentorship opportunities, and strategic partnerships with leading tech firms, all aimed at creating equitable pathways into high-demand STEM careers. Currently, Black women represent less than 5% of the STEM workforce nationally, highlighting a significant gap that Spelman is committed to closing.
The initiative has garnered $15 million in funding from government grants and private sector partners. This investment will go directly into providing students with not only financial support but also access to internships, research facilities, and industry connections that can launch their careers.
Spelman’s track record speaks for itself— the college has continuously ranked among top HBCUs for producing Black women in STEM, with a notable 20% increase in STEM graduates over the past five years. This new program builds on that momentum, aiming to further elevate these numbers and foster a more inclusive tech landscape.
